It's Time to Double Down on Appliance Efficiency
A message from Kate Hughes, Director of International Climate Change, UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy
Appliance energy efficiency has a large role to play at COP 26. Just four products (air conditioners, electric motors, refrigerators and lighting) account for 40% of global electricity consumption. By doubling their efficiency, we can cut electricity demand by 30,000 TWh between 2022 and 2030, the equivalent generation of 1,500 coal-fired power plants, and avoid 13 Gt of CO2 emissions.
The Government of the United Kingdom and Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy have teamed up with the Super Efficient Equipment and Appliances Deployment Initiative (SEAD), IEA and CLASP to launch the 2021 Product Efficiency Call to Action. By signing the Call to Action countries agree to drive international action consistent our goal of doubling the efficiency of four priority products by 2030.
To date, 10 SEAD member governments have endorsed the Call to Action—Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Germany, Ghana, India, Korea, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Ten more governments are reviewing the pledge.
We are also working with organisations like EP100 to build a global coalition private sector companies and civil society groups committed to endorsing our campaign and building a groundswell of support for appliance energy efficiency at COP 26.
